June 2017 began with a startling headline: President Trump’s announcement that he intends to withdraw the U.S. from the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement aligning with Syria and Nicaragua as the only industrialized nations on Earth to reject this landmark global effort toward preserving our precious planet. According to Trump, terms of the agreement were particularly unfair to U.S. business interests. Yet surprisingly, among the most vocal critics of this decision have been some of America’s corporate heavyweights with Tesla/SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Disney chairman Robert Iger resigning from Trump’s advisory council in protest. The majority of corporate America now squarely agrees with the scientific community, the looming dangers of manmade climate change are indeed very real, and limitless profits today cannot come before the world we leave behind to future generations.
In light of the worldwide environmental movement, more and more American companies now talk of conservation and green business practices as the primary foundation of being a good corporate citizen. But with so many manufacturers opting for offshore manufacturing partners, how often do these words actually echo to the distant factory floor? Many U.S.-based OEMs still remain with manufacturing vendors in China, where Beijing’s notorious smog problem may actually be intensified by global climate change, while an estimated 85% of river water near Shanghai is now considered unfit for human consumption or any other purpose.
Syrma’s a Certified Green Supplier
The world’s largest electronics brands hold their vendors accountable to their own stringent green standards. We at Syrma are particularly proud of our recent certification as a Green Supplier by one of our primary clients, a leading international electronics corporation ranking among the Forbes Global 500. Several of our other clients have been likewise impressed with our strong environmental record, indicating that they want to do more when it comes to helping preserve our environment while we still can. We achieved an exceptional total score on their sustainability audit program, which evaluated vendors on a comprehensive checklist of environmentally-conscious criteria, including:
- Acquisition and timely renewal of all necessary environmental permits as required by law
- Establishing waste reduction and recycling targets
- Appropriate storage, use, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials, including ongoing employee training
- Proper solid waste disposal and monitoring of pollutants in wastewater prior to discharge
- Containment of ozone-depleting pollutants released in air emissions
- Similar environmental accountability from supply chain vendors and subcontractors
- Clear product labeling, including hazardous materials and proper consumer disposal or recycling
