Classifications of Drones
Drones are classified on the basis of their weight, such as nano (<=250g), micro (>250g<=2kg), small (>2kg<=25kg), medium (>25kg <=150kg), and large (>150kg). Drones are also called unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), miniature pilotless aircraft, or flying mini-robots. All parts of drones are important for a smooth and safe flight. Electronics that play a critical role in drones are flight and speed controllers and communication systems.
Flight Controller: This is the brain of the drone that interprets the input received from the receiver, GPS module, battery monitor, and on-board sensors and commands the drone. Most importantly it’s responsible for the regulation of the motor speeds through ESC and for the steering of the drone.
Electronic Speed Controller (ESC): The controller is located in the mainframe of the drone and it’s responsible for monitoring and varying the speed, direction, and variations in breaks of the drone during flight. The ESC is also responsible for the conversion of DC battery power to AC power to propel the brushless motors.
Receiver and Transmitter: The receiver unit is responsible for the reception of radio signals sent to the drone through the controller. The transmitter is responsible for the transmission of radio signals from the controller. It’s recommended to have five channels provision to control a drone. Each radio signal has a standard code that helps in differentiating the signal from other signals in the air.
